My monthly trade mag column was reduced from 1,000 words to 685. I still write over 1,000 but then do the pruning myself to make it fit the word budget because (1) I like to be plug-and-play for my editors; they trust me to give them something they barely have to glance over. This is helpful to everyone because I'm frequently submitting my copy at or just past deadline. And because (2) I hate for editors to step on my prose. Weird stuff happens.
As for why everyone's being asked for less, I suspect it's because we're the USADD. Too much information from too many directions. Who has time to read 1,000 words anymore? Tweet me. I loathe and despise this, but my opprobrium doesn't change the fact that bullet points and sound bites have triumphed over narrative.

I get 500 words in a local weekly paper for a monthly column and
ccasional additonal articles.
