Aside from dedicated spell checkers in each program, I use TinySpell

(www.tinyspell.com), a free program with a tiny footprint. It spell checks

everything you put on the screen -- any application, email, notepad, etc. --

beeps (if you want it to), offers alternatives, and allows for added words.
