OK, so if the allowable "flavors" are salty, sweet, sour, bitter, and umami, my homegrown cucumbers have a subtle sweetness, and the waxed ones from the supermarket (it's been a long time since I've had one of those) are a little sour.

But to my palate, knowing that a cucumber can be subtly sweet whereas a tomato can have salty, sweet, sour, and umami flavors does not make the tomato "better." Sometimes "crisp, crunchy, fresh, clean" trumps a juicy flavor bomb.
