Re: seeking French garden recommendations

When my husband and I were in this area a couple of years ago I got a map that was called "Parcs et Jardins de Picardie" There were many listed, from small to large. On the back of the map is the information about when the gardens are open, (all in French) and they are all rated for being historic, for their composition, originality, and for the plants contained - from no stars to three stars, so you can focus in on those with more original designs and lots of plants, for example, as opposed to those that are mostly old mansions with box hedges around them. We spent a week picking a garden as a primary destination and then discovering what else was in the small towns in that area. We'd usually run into someone to ask about people who'd be open to having us visit a private garden (my husband speaks French very well) and that led us to several individuals and their properties. It was a fantastic way to see the country.
