Re: plants tolerant of fountain overspray

Hi, Amy!

My fountain has contributed to the survival of many plants that wouldn't have made it without the extra moisture. Daylilies, anemones, hostas, phlox paniculata (Nora Leigh), ligularia, heuchera, hardy hibiscus and astilbe are on the sunny side. I use several of the shorter sedums with the variegated and dark foliage for contrast.

On the shady side, hydrangeas have done well, both macrophylla and arborescens. Container under plantings of elephant ears and cannas add late season zing and color. The only problem I have is one of choosing what NOT to plant there. If I had the room, I would add some Easy Elegance landscape roses for the all season color and great foliage they have regardless of the kind of season we have. I stay away from anything that isn't hardy to at least a zone 5.

  Hi Amy,

We've had a variety of plants around our fountain and never had a
problem. Our permanent planting turned out to be Huechera Venus, Hosta
Whirlwind, and a Gentian of uncertain parentage. Previously we've had
various types of begonia, impatiens, etc. Our fountain is in the shade
and the native Virginia Creeper wound its way INTO the water and had to
be hacked back. I've seen people grow begonias with their feet in pond
water, so I think you probably have a wide variety of possibilities.

  Regards,
  Lois
