Cell phones at GWA for US residents

I've been asked by several folks about using cell phones in Canada and
what's the best option is. Here's my take as a cross-border resident.

You have several options. If you want to ensure phone and data coverage,
you buy a North American "package" or upgrade from your supplier. That
will give you some minutes or a reduced rate on minutes plus some data.

Or, you can disable data and run it as a pda and emergency phone. I happen
to have a NA wide data plan so I can travel back and forth with data. If
you do not disable data before you cross the border, you will unpleasantly
surprised when you return to a stinkingly large bill.

Voice is another issue, without the extra plan from your provider, they'll
hit you with connection charges as well as the super long distance charges.
Pricey! Texts are treated as phone calls unless they're imessage when
cross-border.

You can get something like Kik but for a few days it's not worth it.

Best bet - disable the data and use the phone as a pda and emergency phone.

Or, if you really need the data/phone - arrange it before you hit the
border with your supplier.

I have Garmin for a GPS and all maps reside on the phone so it's not data
driven. All other GPS systems are data driven. There's a way to take and
store Google Maps on your phone as well but that's beyond the length/scope
of this email but you could Google it.

I can't speak to wifi in the hotel, never stayed there and I don't plan on
going so haven't checked. Somebody may have some input on that.

Hope that helps.

Doug
