Speaking as a cpa (former life but keep license)....I deduct all my gardening 
expenses.....research if nothing else...I'd have deducted a portion of that 
vacation too if I had enough pictures and could show I was either using them 
in my work or trying to sell them.  There's a lot of cases out there to 
support those deductions.  As long as you can show IRS you are are trying to 
make a profit whether you do or not, you'd be surprised at all you can 
deduct.
