Even with all its faults, callery pear does have one redeeming grace: it takes up a solution of glycerine and water beautifully, with the leaves turning a gorgeous shade of dark brown and lasting in dried arrangements for years. My parents planted one on their place about 40 years ago, and, even though it has split several times, careful pruning saved it, and it has provided me with hugh armloads of glycerinized leaves over the years.
I would never plant one as a street tree, but just to have those leaves, I would plant one in an out-of-the-way spot if I had a large property (which my parents did) where it could be tucked in an unobtrusive spot.
