RE: invasives/ definition

Title: [GWL] invasives/ definition
I have no problem with Mr.. Mezitt's definition other than the fact that indigenous plants can't be invasive. Some extremist see any non native plant that can reproduce without the help of man as invasive, regardless of the size of the colony. Biodiversity is something to be achieved not limited.

Wayne Mezitt's recent post regarding the Weston Nursery article on the topic <http://www.westonnurseries.com/New_Site_Pages/Articles_INVASIVE.htm> defines it thusly:

"So, what really is an invasive plant? There is general agreement that there are certain characteristics that help qualify a plant to be ³invasive² in a particular area:
*       It is non-indigenous to the region;
*       It is widespread and has become naturalized in undisturbed areas;
*       It produces and disperses high numbers of seeds or propagules; and
*       It out-competes and displaces natural plants or fundamentally changes an ecosystem¹s functioning."

I'm certain that "invasive" means different things to different folks, all need fresh information on this important topic. For some of the latest developments, check the Missouri Botanical Garden site: <http://www.mobot.org/iss/>
