Graham,
I'm an indexer and do a great deal of work for Rodale -- a natural fit for me, since I'm a master gardener and really understand the books I'm indexing. I don't know how they are for writers to work with, but I can tell you that from an indexer's perspective, they're great -- a truly professional publishing house.
They always send me manuscripts on time. They are clear in their directions and index specifications. They almost never make last minute manuscript changes that cause me to spend hours and hours of extra time re-doing work. They are pleasant, genuinely nice people and extremely professional to work with. As an indexer, they're my favorite client.
If they are as great for a writer to work with as I've found them to be as an indexer, you should enjoy your work with them -- and I'll probably (hopefully) end up indexing your book!!
