Nursery Sales Down

* Total U.S. nursery sales declined slightly last year, according to the 
latest USDA statistics. USDA's Economic Research Service estimated nursery 
crop sales at $8.9 billion in 2002, down marginally from 2001 when sales 
reached an all-time high. Average U.S. household spending on nursery crops 
was $84. ERS speculated that a weak economy was largely to blame for the 
decline. Nursery stock imports (primarily from Canada and the Netherlands) 
account for 3.3% of stock purchased in this country.
