There is a magazine called "Michigan Gardener" that is published 8 times a
year each month of the growing season.  It is given away free at some 70
participating garden centers, or if you want it mailed to you it can be for
a subscription fee.  They distribute over 20,000 copies a month.  They make
their money via the advertising.  Nancy Szerlag has a bi-monthly column of
gardening tools, Janet Maconovich has a monthly column of gardening.
Generally it is well respected by the serious gardeners of southern
Michigan.  No one lives in Northern Michigan (grin).  Call Eric Hofley, the
publisher at 248-594-5563.  This is a very interesting model at a time when
we are all bemoaning the loss of national gardening magazines.  The Michigan
Gardener model would work in many markets with a population of 2 million or
more.  The side effect of the model is to really push the value of the
independent garden center.  In every issue there is a map of southern
Michigan with every participating garden center (those who gives the
magazine away free) located on the map alongside a list of every garden
center's address and telephone number.  Most of the ads as you can imagine
are from the garden centers.  It makes for a very nice network.

Dear Garden Writers:

Does anyone know of a Michigan-based or even a Great Lakes Region Garden
Magazine.  I can find one for Chicago but am failing to find one covering
Michigan.  I can't believe there isn't one somewhere!  I have a feeling
there is one but it is just not online where I can easily find it.
