Title: Re: [GWL] A Pet Peeve and Need Identification Help
I always use botanical names when I write about plants...usually
using the common name first followed by the botanical name in
parenthesis and in Italics. With a plant like hosta, where the common
and botanical name is the same, I usually make an early reference in
Italics. I give cultivar names in single quotes. I have a statement
for the editors and copy editors that I put at the top of all my
columns that says....botanical names in Italics, cultivar names in
single quotess. Most editors follow that.
BUT! Duane is right about the vegetables. I seldom use botanical
names for veggies, although I've been trying to use them more.
However, I do use botanical names for everyithing else, including
annuals.

I almost always include the botanical name when I write, but with some
curious exceptions, which I think most of you also observe. No one ever
says that they start their Lycopersicon at the same time they plant their
Lactuca out. Most vegetables seem to be exempt from Latin. Even an
experienced gardener would be hard pressed to identify Solanum tuberosum.
Some flowers also seem to be exceptions, particularly common annuals like
petunias and marigolds.
