Dan,
I'm sure by now you've heard from someone out west, but just in case: The Western Garden Book is pretty much the bible on the left coast. It's published by Sunset, and it divides up that greatly-varied stretch of the planet into... I forget how many zones, but it's over 20. USDA hardiness zones take into account only average temperature ranges. Sunset zone ratings factor in influences such as altitude, ocean influence, rainfall or lack of it, and feng shui.
