My wife works for the Children's Department of the
library. Number One: unless you live north of San Fransciso or perhaps in
Boulder, Colorado, no library system can afford to go it alone. Number
Two: Most communites are strapped beyond belief because the tax base is now
going into all directions to support what's there. Example: Bill Gates gives
free computers to libraries BUT doesn't fund the cost of the paper or
maintenance. Number Three: You cannot ask for the filters to be removed BECAUSE
most libraries do not have the staff to employ a full-time webmaster. As to
filters I've been a liberal all my life (and continue to be) but I see no
reason for the ALA to fight filters in the Children's Department--and that's
exactly what they are doing. In our library people are coming in off the street
to use the computers to place bets or sign on to porn--and that has nothing to
do with filters but it has everything to do with societal responsiblity! Peter
