who owns the copyright to images in these books? The author? publisher? photographer ? or, in the case of some images from museums - the institution?
Katy – My advice is to examine each volume for photo credit information, and contact the publisher of each edition. They will certainly know who holds the copyrights. The photographer owns the copyright when the photo was created, but the rights may have been sold, licensed or given away. (Current copyright laws in the US grant the photographer copyrights for his/her lifetime plus 70 years.) You might also try googling for matches to the images you would like to use.
Please keep us posted on your progress — this is an interesting topic.
