Re: Slide Production
I also use a local film lab for processing. The cost varies depending on
whether or not I pushed the film an extra stop or anything, but it's usually
about $8/roll.
If cost is the biggest issue, you're probably better off using pre-paid
mailers from a place like BH Photo (www.bhphotovideo.com). Strangely
enough, Kodak developing seems better than Fuji even when using Fuji film,
though (I generally shoot Velvia 100 now).
But there are a number of other reasons why I use local developing:
. Sending the film out for developing is iffy when there are special
instructions. I've sent film out that had to be pushed a stop or
two and they didn't do it, so everything was ruined.
. Instant gratification. :) Sending stuff out takes up to two weeks,
whereas local developing is usually just a day. If I'm shooting plants
that have a limited bloom period, I want to know that the photos didn't
come out so that I can reshoot them while the plant is still blooming.
. My local film lab uses plastic slide mounts, whereas the places that
I've used mailers for always use cardboard. I prefer plastic because
it doesn't break up with time and leave dust on the slide, it doesn't
absorb humidity, and they don't stick in my slide scanner like the
cardboard mounts sometimes do.
. The last reason is that I'm supporting a local business. It helps my
city's economy and I have a person that I can talk to about photography.
If a slide doesn't come out, I can talk to them and we can figure out
what I did wrong and how I could correct it in future attempts.
Hopefully this info helps someone. :)
