More Magazines Gone
Today I received the following from Jere Gettle, publisher of the Heirloom
Gardener:
"It is with deep regret that I must announce effective today, June 17, 2004,
the Heirloom Gardener magazine has ceased publication.
Today's soft magazine market coupled with readily accessible Internet
reference material, proved to be too much for our little venture. While we
were building a subscription database, progress was very slow and, in
consideration of all factors, I have decided on this course of action."
Two weeks ago, I learned that Yankee Publications which is the publisher of
the Old Farmer's Almanac, The Gardener's Companion and Yankee Magazine has
decided to stop publishing The Gardener's Companion. To quote Janice
Stillman, the executive publisher, "We are finding that people don't want to
garden, and they are more interested in pre-planted containers and hiring
landscape services." In other words, Ms. Stillman and her company's
research have found the same thing that Doug Green said so eloquently about
three months ago--Do you want a garden or do you want to garden? The answer
seems to be everyone wants a garden.
