In response to your query, "southern-isms"?for horticultural activities go something like this:? A bed or flower bed is planted with annuals, perennials, shrubs, etc.? A garden is planted with vegetables.? A patch holds?one specific fruit of vegetable, i.e., tomato patch, okra patch.

As for the general?out of doors place you perform horticultural activities -- you're working out in the yard.

I must tell you that it's becoming harder and harder to find true indigenous Southern speakers these days in Charlotte,?Washington, Atlanta and throughout?the traditional south.? The problem?? Yankees!? I should know, being raised in northern Indiana.
