Re: Buddleia/Buddleja

You may be interested in the fact that last year the National Zoo 
chose Buddleja as one of its plants of the month, for its value in 
attracting insects. After protests from the "invasive" plant lobby, 
it changed its mind saying:

"We do recognize that Buddleia, while it attracts butterflies, is an 
invasive exotic that we should not be promoting. We have removed that 
article, replacing Buddleia with the native flowering dogwood."

Well, you can guess what I think of that!

USDA Noxious Weed Information says:

Oregon: "B" designated weed (excpt horticultural varieties)
Washington: Class C noxious weed

Can't even get Buddleja through the winter here in zone 5b. But the 
National Zoo seems to think I shouldn't even try!

However, I'm looking forward to seeing the RHS trial of Buddelia 
davidii at Wisley next month - 113 varieties. They're arranging for 
schoolkids to participate in a butterfly count on the trial in 
conjunction with the Butterfly Conservation Society.
