Re: Yard vs Garden

How about this approach?

A landscape surrounding a home when formally designed for beauty and
form is called the "garden". It is special in the minds of the
homeowners and they take special care to keep it attractive as a
whole just as someone would care for a single flower bed.

The landscape that is not formally designed but simply is what was
there when the homeowner moved in - lawn, trees, shrubs, some
foundation plants - is a "yard" not deserving the fancy schmansy
title of garden because it is just there and cared for only to keep
it neat and tidy; but no design input whatsoever.

You guys write for the gardeners who have around their home a
"garden" and I write for yardeners who do not know what roots do much
less what a lilac looks like and thus care for their "yard" .

I can feel those smirks people! No need to be rude. A small chuckle
would suffice.

Oh well,

When I was taking classes in a horticulture dept., the landscape
architect who taught the design classes told us to call the outdoor
space a "garden" rather than a "yard" partly to persuade homeowners
to invest in higher-end professional landscape designers and
gardeners. "Your yard" conjures images of a utilitarian space. "Your
garden" connotes your own personal paradise.
