Re: Yard vs Garden

We have a local brewery in Philadelphia çalled "yards", I explained the GWL concerns to one óf their truckdrivers and asked him to weigh in. He said we should plant our hops and pray for rain.

Subject: Re: [GWL] Yard vs Garden

Speaking as an Englishwoman I feel this whole discussion boils down
to the old "two nations divided by a common language" problem. Words
simply don't mean the same thing on both sides of the Atlantic. When
I spent a year living and gardening in the US I rapidly got used to
the idea that I was planting gardens in my yard. I had a herb garden
in my yard, a veg garden in my yard (and didn't I surprise my
Oklahoma neighbours when they found I was cropping it all through the
winter) and a flower garden. All in my yard. This wouldn't work in
England where the yard is paved and, as others have said, pretty much
a utility area though it is normal to find things like a basketball
net or soccer goals marked on a wall if the yard is large enough. The
garden may also be paved of course - in fact in a tiny city garden it
is quite likely that the garden will mostly be paved and the plants
in containers. Seating areas and barbecue are always in the garden -
even if they are right next to the dustbin (trash can)
