Re: How to refer to trademarked plant names?

Yes, you'll find lots of non-cultivar names between single quotes where they don't belong, just as you'll find the vehicles of healthy scofflaws in handicapped parking spots. Lots of things happen in the name of convenience that shouldn't. This subject has become increasingly unwieldy, to the point that even nomenclature experts, like the compilers of the Naamlijst, can't possibly keep up or keep track.
There are advantages to plant introducers such as PW, Conard-Pyle, et al to giving a potentially profitable plant two names: One to register it with the appropriate registrar and with USPTO or PBR, and one to trademark for marketing purposes. Patents expire; trademarks, if policed, do not. A trademarked series, e.g. Endless Summer or Knock Out, can be added to indefinitely; a plant identified by a trademark name can be replaced with a superior cultivar if one comes along; and so on. Confusing at first, but a workable system.
I wonder if publications are reluctant to publish trademarked names with symbols because it smacks of advertising, and they're wary of giving away even tiny pieces of their main revenue source.

I see trademarked and registered names being put in
quotes all the time by publications because they do not want to use the
symbols for some reason (Heard a number of reasons - makes it to messy).

For instance, Black Lace Sambucus - I always saw it being put in single
quotes. Like I stated this is not o
ur preference, but I know some
publications will not allow the use of trademarked or registered symbols -
which I don't understand because as you stated the or ® name should not be
put in quotes, but we understand that it happens.
