Re: Thistles
For starters, the "thistle seed" for finches is called Nyger seed and is
imported and required to be heat treated by the Dept. of Agriculture and
customs. The botanical name is Guizotia abyssinica. Canada thistle is Cirsium
arvense. True nyger is imported from Africa while the other is a garden
thug. You may have to use a stronger solution of Round up or another brush
killer to take out what seems to be Canada thistle. There is horticultural
vinegar that is a 20% solution that you should be able to buy from
horticultural supply houses such as BFG or Wetzel. But I would go back to where you
got the thistle and read them the riot act because I suspect that what you
got was a cheap substitute but charged for the real thing.

Hey Chris,
Thanks for the vinegar tip. I HATED using Round Up, because I'm organic,
but I was desperate. Then it didn't work. I've used 10 percent white
vinegar on weeds before with excellent results. However, I cannot find it
locally now and the shipping on vinegar is so high. I'll run out to the
rock garden now and spray with vinegar to see if it works. Very hot and
sunny, today, so that will help.
