Re: Heronswood Sold
Having spent a little time on one "rez" out west (Navajo/Hopi, AZ) and passed through or by another couple, I'm sorry to report that everything is not changed. Poverty, despair and discrimination -- not to mention alcoholism and violence -- are still very much in evidence. You'd recognize it.
Tribes that have opened casinos have been known to refer to gambling as "the new buffalo."

As much as I personally dislike casinos, I think it's poetic justice that
ative Americans have found this way of obtaining compensation for the
ontinent that was taken from them. I lived on the Cherokee Reservation
n NC during the 1970s and got an up-close and personal look at stark
overty, despair, and discrimination in a place where the folks were much
etter off than most of their peers. This was also around the time of the
IM movement centered in Wounded Knee, so I got a good look at the
olitics, as well. It ain't pretty. I'm sure everything is so changed
oday that I wouldn't recognize it.
Casinos are an imperfect solution to Native Americans' many problems, but
hey are a start.
like the George Ball/S'Klallam Tribe "treaty" and wish them good
ortune for a long partnership. American Indians have historically been
ood stewards of the land and stellar in keeping their promises.

ois
