Re: Heronswood Sold

As much as I personally dislike casinos, I think it's poetic justice that
Native Americans have found this way of obtaining compensation for the
continent that was taken from them. I lived on the Cherokee Reservation
in NC during the 1970s and got an up-close and personal look at stark
poverty, despair, and discrimination in a place where the folks were much
better off than most of their peers. This was also around the time of the
AIM movement centered in Wounded Knee, so I got a good look at the
politics, as well. It ain't pretty. I'm sure everything is so changed
today that I wouldn't recognize it.

Casinos are an imperfect solution to Native Americans' many problems, but
they are a start.
I like the George Ball/S'Klallam Tribe "treaty" and wish them good
fortune for a long partnership. American Indians have historically been
good stewards of the land and stellar in keeping their promises.

Lois
