Re: scale remedy

A light hort oil will do the trick but you need to be persistent. One
spray will seem to work then months later you'll notice the scale is back.
Depending on the type of scale (soft or hard) the best control is achieved
when the scale is in the crawler stage as the 'shell' often protects the
adults if there isn't complete coverage. Also not a good idea to apply the
oils when it's very hot. I use a 10x loupe to inspect for scale and determine
if there are crawlers. Took a couple of months and three well timed oil
applications to eradicate but if you're careful and have good timing an oil
labeled as Ultra Fine should do the trick...there are a number of brands.
And as they say...read the label.

My big overwintering problem is scale on a 20-year-old bay leaf plant.
Treating with cooking oil spray seems worth trying. The plant is too
heavy to lug into the shower every week.
