Plant names

Title: Plant names
The best and most reliable source of reference on plant names is undoubtedly The Plant Finder from the Royal Horticultural Society. Published in May each year, and also available online, this fat 958 page paperback book not only includes the latest plant names but also lists the sources in Britain of over 70,000 different plants. This second element (while indispensible in Britian) is of less interest to North American gardeners than the fact that each edition incorporates the latest nomenclatural changes approved by a Royal Horticultural Society committee of horticultural botanists. These updates not only include major changes, such as the merging of Cimicifuga into Actaea which has been discussed here, but also changes relating to individual varieties. The extensive bibliography is also most a valuable indication of where to find more information on specific genera.

In the past, the book has been criticised for incorporating taxonomic and nomenclatural changes before they had been fully accepted by the botanical and horticultural world. More recently, the book has taken a more conservative view and as each new edition appears there are fewer surprises. No one with an interest in ensuring that correct plant names are used (which should include everyone on this list) should be without this book. It sits close to hand on both my American and British desks!

The Plant Finder is available from amazon.co.uk (not amazon.com) for £15.33 including air mail to the US - ie about $22. It's a bargain. The whole book is also available online at www.rhs.org.uk (click on RHS Plant Finder).
