Re: Spider Mites

The most common and destructive spider mite that people deal with both indoors and out is the two spotted spider mite and this is the one that most frequently infests ivy.  The eggs of this mite are always found on the undersides of the foliage, are perfect spheres and translucent.  When found in the early stages the mites and their eggs are easily controlled with frequent fine but strong sprays of water directed to the leaf undersides.  This needs to be repeated every few days initially then twice a week for several weeks to get rid of successive generations.
   There was some recent university research that also showed that aphids can be controlled in a similar manner and that water sprays applied as noted above were as effective as most contact insecticides such as pyrethrum but without any of the phytotoxic effects to the plant.
