RE: The name game
My mail server has been down for over a day and have just checked the
backlog in the archive.
Polygonatum merged into Convallaria? I'd not heard that one, can you
give me the reference?
The name Hylotelephium has been lost again, so the correct name for
Sedum 'Autumn Joy' is now Sedum 'Herbstfreude'.
I would not suggest changing labels and stocklists instantly a new
name is published, sometimes the changes do not last. But the problem
with the Linnaean system is that the names of plants reflect their
botanical relationships with each other - so when a name changes it
often reflects an increased
understanding of the plant and its fundamendal characteristics. So
the name tells us something useful about the plant as well as being
just a tag - therefore keeping up to date with the names also keeps
us up to date with new discoveries about the plants themselves.
