agreed. I occasionally take heat from purists because in our catalog, I list
names recognized by growers/customers ahead of names recognized by
taxonomists. But that's life. I'm not writing Hortus IV; I'm selling
plants, and I'm going to favor the names that customers know and will look
for before the "correct" name.
When customers start asking for Monarda 'Blaustrumpf' or Hylotelephium
'Herbstfreude' (or when taxonomists start buying liners by the truckload),
I'll reverse the order. In the meantime, they'll find M. 'Blue Stocking' and
Sedum 'Autumn Joy' listed first, the "correct" name du jour second.
The related issue you raise, the mess and expense of keeping a good, current
inventory of picture tags is another can of worms entirely -- big, fat,
wriggly, expensive worms.
