Re: The name game
Hello Marty,
Taxonomic discussions are indeed fun, but the resulting changes are
almost always disruptive. Being both a garden writer and nursery owner I get
to follow the process all the way through. Many of us are, indeed, very
reluctant to make the changes reflected in the intellectual pursuits. All
those changes cost someone money, top to bottom, all the way down the line.
If I were a wholesaler I would not be happy if I carried 100,000 of a plant
ready for shipment to find out the color labels I had printed for the plants
are no longer valid... throw them away?... no way... It also confuses the
hell out of my customers .. they can not find the plant if we keep changing
the name. Most gardeners are not interested in all these intellectual
pursuits... they just want their plants.
As a writer it is sometimes hard to relate the folk tales that come with
a native plant when the name no longer is there. I did an article recently
on Solomon's Seal, or Polygonatum... these have now been moved over to Lily
of the Valley. I noted the change in my article, but have not made changes
in my catalog or inventory..... the old name remains valid... just someone
else has preferences....
