Re: The name game

Dear All: About bugbane and name-changes, I'm am reminded of the story of
the Missouri evening primrose. Discovered in the early 1800s by Thomas
Nuttall, English plant explorer, who sent seed to London where it appeared
under the name Oenothera macrocarpa (large seedpods). In 1913, John Sims,
English, the editor of Curtis's Botanical Magazine, ignored the proper name
and called it O. missourensis, and adding insult to injury, misspelled it,
dropping the "i" in Missouri. In 1976 Hotus the III still called it O.
missourensis but some years later the mistake was found and the plant's
scientific name went back to O. macrocarpa. Today, confusion rules.
So regardless of a change that, except for this list, would have gone
unheralded and unnoticed, I will continue to call American bugbane
Cimicifuga until such time as The New York Times properly puts scientific
names in italic when the surrounding text is roman. That'll be the day!
Best, Peter
