Re: National Passtime
Excellent myth-puncturing, Jeff.
Contrast Jeff's observations with a single set I took while travelling by
train through the suburbs of Manchester (UK). I simply counted the number
of back gardens with greenhouses, and found that between two stations
separated by (about) 10 miles, one-fifth of the back gardens had some kind
of plastic, glass or fiberglass shelter for raising plants. What do you
think a similar survey would come up with in the USA? I live in a
prosperous town of about 6000 people. I have a small hobby greenhouse, and
know of only two others in the whole community.
Let's be realistic. There are a lot of gardeners, but not nearly so many as
we would like to believe.
