Re: National Passtime


Ten years ago when I was researching number of gardeners who read garden 
books, I calculated that there were more gardeners in the US than the UK, but 
it doesn't look like it because they are dispersed over a much greater area. 
As a percentage of population, however, there's no question in my mind that 
it's higher in the UK. Also I would guess that the great amount of money 
spent in the US is due to sales of outdoor power equipment. But don't forget 
there is a reason why British publishers (and others) want a share of the 
American market. If the number of gardeners in the US is 10 million, that's 
about one-half the population of Australia. I'm not up to date with stats on 
the total population of Great Britain or garden book market there. Would I be 
wrong in guessing it's less than that of the US?
