Re: Yards versus gardens


In England a yard is the paved area where you store your trash cans - 
otherwise known as rubbish bins.  Originally in America the usage was 
the same as in England, but gradually it changed here.  Curious about 
the evolution of the usage, I spoke to Kent Brinkley at Colonial 
Williamsburg about the matter.  He wrote the following to me: "During 
the eighteenth-century, the open space between the main house and the 
typical collection of outbuildings came to be called the dooryard.  This 
open space was a work area devoted to household chores, and generally 
contained a shade tree but no flowers or shrubs.  It is from this word 
that the familiar, general word yeard evolved, meaning any space 
surrounding the house (such as front yard, back yard, etc.)."   Catriona
