Ecological damage by goldfish/letters & web "facts"

Subject: Ecological damage by goldfish

Further to the topic of ecological damage by goldfish, if any of you are
interested in reading correspondence from a fish biologist, and the web
posting that prompted me to contact him, please let me know.

The fish biologist believes there is "a real ecological catastrophe" with
exotic fish and it's pretty clear to me now that we also have an issue
related to gardeners and the garden industry, that ornamental fish owners
have contributed to the problem, and we as garden writers have an obligation
to inform the public, to suggest ways to alleviate the problem and recommend
alternatives.

After an extensive web search, I selected and made a sequenced list of
"points" which are excerpts from a report at http://nas.er.usgs.gov/ and
other web findings chosen to illustrate some of the many aspects to this
problem (14 items).

I made the list for my own education, but I am happy to share it with anyone
on this listserve who requests it, with the understanding that it is simply a
starting point for further research and thought. Of my list, the biologist
says "You have done a nice job of covering many potential consequences of
stocking nonnative fish: direct effects on native fish via competition for
food, and a host of indirect effects like spread of disease and parasites,
impacts to aquatic plants and water clarity, and

other impacts like harm to non-fish biota like amphibians, etc. As you

probably suspect, you've only scratched the surface of the issue."

The biologist also calls attention to a recent book "Nonindigenous Fishes
Introduced into Inland Waters of the United States" available from:
http://www.fisheries.org/publications/catbooks/x51027.shtml

which he has not yet seen himself, but suspects may be one of the best
sources of

reliable information on this topic.
