Very interesting thread. I'm a wetland commission member here in NY and another commission member is heading down to Charleston for a week and wanted to know what gardens to visit. My wife is an architectural historian specializing in the 18 cent. plantations of the Carolina lowlands and we suggested Middleton first, Magnolia second...but you may want to go to Mount Pleasant about fifteen minutes out of town to check out Boone Plantation. The gardens there were featured in Horticulture Magazine a year or so ago. If you're a member of GWAA you should also go to the membership book and contact the local members who will be most helpful in finding appropriate spots for your specific horticultural interests.
