Re: [GWL]:Goldfish/a beautiful bit of nature

One thing that no one ever seems to take into account is that many of
these invasive plants aren't invasive in all areas. Water hyacinth dies
every fall here in Oregon, and the only way to have it is to overwinter some
indoors. Kudzu, likewise, doesn't spread here. I watched a patch of it for
at least 20 years and while the vines got long, they never set seed or
spread beyond the original crowns, and they died back each winter. The
funny part is that the Oregon dept. of Ag. has declared it an invasive weed
and when they found that one patch, they poisoned and bulldozed it, and the
hillside where it was located promptly slid down this winter. Oh yes, the
patch had probably been planted by the highway department as a test of
erosion control.
The point is that it behooves us, and the "researchers" to see if some
of these "invasive" plants don't actually have value in the right sort of
environment.
