Am I being naive, or did I just get shafted?

I'd say the latter, Lon. The editor had no business showing your manuscript to the other writer at all, especially without clearing it with you first. Very unprofessional at best.

I once had a similar experience, in which my manuscript got mislaid during a move, and they then accepted one from a different writer on the same subject. My story was better (said the editor) and they wanted to incorporate part of it.

They wound up using my lead, and a couple of other small sections.

The differences are: 1. I was informed ahead of time and asked if it was OK; 2. the second writer never saw my manuscript; and 3. I was paid as if the entire story had been used. That is, full amount normally paid by them for a feature story, plus extra for the pix.
