Nan,

Before you try the "hard stuff", try pouring boiling water from your tea 
kettle over the roots (unless you have so much of the stuff that this isn't 
practical). I've found this a good solution for weeds in general which pop up 
in my brick walkway and patio. Very few are tough enough to withstand good 
old boiling H2O.
