newspaper contracts

You make some good points.  The San Diego Union/Tribune newspaper 
pressured freelancers to signing an unacceptable (pretty much non 
negociable) contract when the Tasini case was in trial.  I guess they 
got the wind up then.  The Washington Post has a similar contract to the 
Union/Tribune (they agreed to a significantly higher fee to make up for 
getting internet rights).  The result is I have stopped my regular 
column for the Union/Tribune and I think thrice before offering anything 
to the Washington Post.  At this point, unless it's a quick and easy 
sell, I don't bother with newspapers any more.  I like to think it's 
their loss...  Certainly the garden articles in the San Diego 
Union-Tribune are now pretty weak, and there aren't many of them.  (Lots 
of freelancers - courageous souls - refused to sign the dreaded
