I posted an inquiry to a coleus eforum and this response was posted:
Hi, to add some more to the confusion:
The proper name for Coleus amoinicus is Plectrantus amboinicus
(Lour.) Spreng. (described in Syst. Veg. 2 (1825) 690, syn. Coleus
amboinicus).
The 'scary cat plant' is described as a Coleus canin hybrid. This
should probably be named as Plectranthus caninus hybrid. Although
there is a Plectranthus caninus Roth (syn. Coleus spicatus)
described in Nov. Pl. Sp. 279 but also a Coleus caninus Vatke (syn.
Coleus comosus) in Linnaea, xxxvii (1871-73) 318 (source of
information: IPNI).
The scary cat plant is a hybrid raised by Dieter Stegmeier, Unteres
Dorf 7, 73 457 Essingen . ( Http://www,gaertnerei-stegmeier.de). <Http://www,gaertnerei-stegmeier.de%29.> It
is a hybrid between a Plectranthus caninus (Coleus canin) plant from
Australia (there also used to scare cats 'nd dogs) and a plant he
took back from Brasil being there on holidays. The name of that
plant is 'secret' (I think he just doesn't know what the name is,
because he gives the name of the other parent and also the plant is
licenced already). The only information given is that it has a
menthol odeur.
My best guess is that is either Plectranthus barbatus Andr.
(described in Bot. Rep. t. 594., syn. Coleus barbatus), that was
introduced from Africa into Brasil, or it is Plectranthus
amboinicus, that was introduced in Brasil from India. This species
is described as having an oregano/eucalypthus scent. Plectranthus
barbatus does have a smell also but I don't know whether it is
menthol like.

Hi John,
I don't have the plant, but maybe I can point you in the right direction. I did a poinsettia column recently with Norwin Heimos of Millstadt Greenhouses, one of the growers and marketers of the "Scardy Cat" plants. The plants are marketed in Europe under the name "Piss Off," (determined to be too offensive for our delicate American sensibilities). I can tell you that the plant's odor is enough to deter me. Anyway, the literature Norwin gave me says the plant is Sumcol 01 (PAF) Coleus Canina-Hybrid.
Norwin had a booth at last year's GWA convention. You can contact him at Millstadt Greenhouses, 618-476-7200. I believe his e-mail is MLSTD@HTC.NET. His operation is located near me in Illinois, about an hour from St. Louis, MO.
