keeping copies

With two writers in the house, the stacks of articles and clipping we "must" keep gets on the verge of overwhelming. Then, I remember the stories about old people found dead in their houses, which are a maze of stacks of newspapers, and I begin ruthlessly culling my own stacks.

My oldest work—more than five years—I tend to keep one or two copies of. So far, no editor has minded color copies of magazine articles instead of the real thing. Usually, I show only published articles from the last couple of years, and then I'm quite selective (with weekly color features in the newspaper, I can be).

Do color copies work for other writers trying to get assignments? How many articles do you circulate when going after work?
