I have given away my writing before, but only to organizational newsletters, such as the local chapter of the Sierra Club. I have also contributed chapters to a book, for which I was paid (not much, but it was one of my first assignments).
Friend or not, if you are contributing to the book, you should be paid. Timber Press does not give any advances (perhaps someone knows of an actual exception to this rule?), so your writer-friend doesn't have anything up front to give you from that stash (yes, advances are so huge for garden writers), but you should still get a flat fee for the writing (I have no experience with selling photos).
That first book contribution (to one of the Dummies garden books) 5 years ago paid only $300 per chapter. I don't see anything wrong with starting small (small payments), and then, as you gain experience and credibility, asking for bigger payments.
