Title: Re: [GWL] work for free I approached Timber Press about my book on grapes when I was looking for a publisher. They did offer an advance, though it was very small. Part of the reason is that they sell such highly specialized books their print runs are small. If something sell well enough to go into more printings, you might make something, but most of their titles only sell small numbers to specialized audiences. They did one on purple leaf plums that literally didn't sell at all. It was a very well done book, but so specialized it had no audience. On the other hand, their book on Hostas took off and has gone to several printings.
Point is, they don't offer a lot, so be prepared to haggle, and hope the book sells.
Friend or not, if you are contributing to the book, you should be paid.
Timber Press does not give any advances (perhaps someone knows of an
actual exception to this rule?), so your writer-friend doesn't have
anything up front to give you from that stash (yes, advances are so huge
