Diana -
I visited the "Christian" gardeners list site and read some of the things
you've been talking about on the GWL and dealing with personally. One issue
that Smitty is ignoring is the fact that there is economic damage done to
the copyright holder every time his/her works are distributed freely, to the
point that the original author's name may be lost, text is changed and
deleted -- all to the point that the original work becomes totally
worthless. Most professional writers understand that their web-published
work will probably be pirated, but that does not mean that it is OK to
pirate it anyway.
The proper way to utilize someone else's copyrighted info in an email is to
mention the article then include the link to the page, without copying and
resending it to the rest of the world. The linking method allows the author
to be properly credited and the site owner gets another set of eyeballs
looking at the site -- possible ad sales revenues. Without that, there is no
incentive to have a website with quality information. This method is
slightly less convenient to all involved, but it is clearly legal. Copy and
paste is questionable at best.
As Scripture says, just dust off your feet and move on to the next place,
which you have done. God bless you for taking a stand.
