The gentleman has always been a good friend of mine
Melanie,
Do not let friendship stand in the way of good business practices. Good, solid, air-tight and fair contracts between friends help maintain friendships. Sloppy, ambiguous, or unfair contracts erode friendships.
If this man is truly your friend, he'll want to see you treated fairly, and from what you've told us about the contract so far, you're not being treated fairly at all. If you want to preserve the friendship, either nicely insist on a fair contract or turn down the work. Otherwise, you'll feel used (and you will have been used), and the friendship will be damaged.
