Ponds and Fish

Those considering ponds should consider a few things.  In many cases what you put in them in terms of fish are regulated by state law, especially if the pond has an outlet, but even in NY you're technically not supposed to stock a pond without a state permit.  Another consideration is the legal quagmire you may get into by building a pond.  Some areas have wetland regulations or laws.  If your pond is of adequate size (which does not include the preformed ones you can buy at a garden center) your pond may then come under local jurisdiction.  Lastly, for those who are saying a pond can't be a healthy pond unless it has fish...you need to read up on vernal pools and ponds.  The definition of a vernal feature varies by state and federal definition but they are critical to the life cycles of numerous plants, reptiles and amphibians...but are always exclusive of....FISH.
