Thanks for the info on vernal pools -- I had not heard the term. I found more info on the topic at:

Clearly a viable ecosystem can function properly without fish, but we have all read the water gardening articles (and written them) that discuss how to create a balanced pond with fish and plants that work well together. I think a pond with both is easier to maintain and appears natural (although "natural" is a stretch of the word since at least half of the pond's inhabitants are likely to be introduced species).

I have always wanted to know about alternative fish for water gardens. Someone mentioned bass, bluegill and catfish. I would think that bluegill might be attractive. Does anyone have a source of info on alternative fish for water gardens? And how about sources for the fish?
